Genesis began their journey to become one of the top progressive rock bands in Europe. The band's reputation grew with each album release, especially their theatrical live performances, which received rave reviews. Charisma Records, the band's record company, proposed the production of a live film, which was recorded twice during the tour in October 1973, but Genesis was not satisfied with the content and decided to keep the film. The band decided to record a live studio performance with an audience at Shepperton Studios in Surrey on October 30 of the same year.
