A long-awaited CD reissue of Orff’s late masterpiece! An extremely rare and significant recording of an Orff work conducted by Karajan. Although the work premiered on August 20, 1973, at the Salzburg Festival with the same cast featured on this album, this recording was made prior to that performance. The star-studded and diverse lineup of participating artists is a feat truly unique to Karajan. This work is an apocalyptic comedy in which Orff depicts the end of the world based on the ideas of Christian theologians such as Origen. The Latin and German texts were written by Orff himself. Please note that this CD does not include a side-by-side translation. Only a “synopsis” is provided. We appreciate your understanding. “As the First Oil Crisis fueled social unrest and ‘The Great Prophecies of Nostradamus’ became a bestseller, and a sense of impending doom was steadily building around the world. Premiered at the 1973 Salzburg Festival, this is the only existing recording of Orff’s late-career masterpiece, which has never been restaged to this day due to the sheer scale of its orchestration. Set to Orff’s distinctive, barbaric percussion ensemble, the “Priestesses” and “Hermits” sing of catastrophe. The highlight of the entire work is the viol quartet in the finale (featuring the Quicken brothers)—music that is terrifying yet beautiful and ephemeral, evoking a desolate world in the aftermath of nuclear war. “There is no way to fathom what Karajan—the ‘Emperor of Beautiful Sound’—was thinking when he performed this extraordinary work, but I can only be grateful that this recording has been preserved.” (Yoshitada Shiro, Shinjuku Store)
