The new production by Richard Jones, one of Britain's leading directors, brings the opera to life with his witty and insightful stage knowledge and character portrayals. The opera depicts the last years of Queen Elizabeth I's life, focusing on her complicated relationship with her favorite son, the Earl of Essex. In this production, Toby Spence gives a charming performance as the passionate but somewhat unreliable Earl of Essex, and he and the dignified Susan Bullock highlight the sadness of Elizabeth's last years in glory.
