The collection includes three orchestral works by Poulenc. The ballet music "The Mare" was written at the age of 24. Commissioned by Diaghilev, the leader of the Ballets Russes, to compose the piece, Poulenc wrote an extremely elegant and light work. Marie Laurencin was in charge of costumes and equipment for the premiere. The piece, which was originally inspired by a painting of hers, was a great success and, as the title "L'enfant terrible" suggests, it fully expresses the mood of the Paris salons of the 1920s. The "Model Animals" is a ballet music completed in 1941, based on the fable of La Fontaine. Of course, it is not merely a depiction of animals, but a keen observation of human beings. The final piece, "Sinfonietta," is not ballet music, but rather an expansion of the idea for a string quartet, and is a work from Poulenc's mature period in which a succession of fascinating melodies appear.
