2016 marks the 100th anniversary of the death of Granados (1867-1916), and this new NAXOS series will shed light on Granados' "orchestral works". Granados was one of the best pianists of his time, and his works for piano are still much loved today for their romanticism and Chopin-, Liszt-, and Rachmaninoff-esque atmosphere. On the other hand, his orchestral and stage works are less popular and less well-known than his piano works (even Sanseido's music dictionary does not list his orchestral works!) It is regrettable that his orchestral and stage works are treated as if he had never written any orchestral works. For example, the "March of the Losers," recorded at the beginning of this album, was written for the Spanish Holy Week, but the dark and enigmatic march is so descriptive that you can feel the pain unintentionally. It has the crispness of music from a western movie.For those who enjoy folkloric flavors, the "Suite of Galician Folk Songs" is a must. This ambitious and forceful music will change the image of Granados that many people have of him. Naxos Japan
