English composer Vaughan Williams (1872-1958) is known for his idyllic and pastoral works, including nine symphonies, an orchestral piece on a folk song theme, and "Aerial Lark," a sound image itself. Throughout his life, Williams continued to produce wonderful works of chamber music and solo music. The Piano Quintet uses the same instrumentation as Schubert's "Trout," and the graceful theme in the second movement has a depth reminiscent of Brahms' works. The final movement is a brilliant variation, the germ of which would blossom beautifully in the Violin Sonata 50 years later. The Romance was discovered after his death, and although the date of composition is unknown, it was probably written for the great viola player Tartis. The flowing Clarinet Trio reflects the unbridled creativity of the still young composer.The "Exercise on English Folk Songs" is a work that is typical of his achievements as a researcher, and the familiar melodies are carefully shaped.
