Description:
Chamber music arrangements of Beethoven's works have been attracting much attention recently. This release includes a piano and string quintet version of the "Piano Concerto No. 1" by the Romantic composer Vincenz Lachner and a piano trio version of Beethoven's "Symphony No. 2" by Beethoven himself. Lachner, who arranged the concerto, is the four-year-old younger brother of Ignaz, who is known for his arrangements of Mozart's works and has left his mark on history as a highly regarded musician by Brahms and Clara Schumann. This arrangement was created by Lachner as a study piece at the suggestion of German pianist and teacher Sigmund Lebert, who said that the soloist students could choose to be accompanied by a second piano or by a string quintet version that sounded more concise than this orchestral version. Beethoven's own arrangement of the "Symphony No. 1" is in keeping with the Biedermeier trend (an activity that focuses on familiar, everyday objects) that was popular at the time, and is intended to make large-format musical works easy to perform in the home.
