Description:

This fascinating 30-disc box set traces the "history of Western music" from the Gregorian chant, which is said to have been established roughly between the 9th and 10th centuries, to the end of the 17th century, just before the arrival of Bach and Handel. In particular, the "Renaissance Music" releases, which were still rare in the 1990s, have become a valuable resource not only for general listeners, but also for researchers. The performances were either performed using instruments as they were in use at the time or reproductions of instruments. The period research has been carefully conducted. The sound of lutes, violas, viols, and other instruments rarely heard in modern times are also worth noting. [CD1]8.550711 Gregorian chant is a collection of monophonic chants (plainchant) of the Western Church, monophonic, unaccompanied religious music. When used in the liturgy, it is decided that different texts should be used depending on the purpose of the Mass, and this album contains the singing according to the "decided text = proper text". [CD2]8.550998Hildegard von Bingen (Hildegard of Bingen) was a Benedictine abbess in medieval Germany. She was the first woman to become a church doctor and left music based on her own visionary experiences. This is a mystical collection of songs that reaffirms the beauty of the melody line without any chords, or "human voice," while at the same time gently and powerfully preaching piety and faith. [CD3]8.554257 In music history, troubadours were poets active in the south of France around the 12th century, of various statuses, who wrote on the theme of love, and more than 2000 poems and 200 melodies survive. Female vocals with an ethnic atmosphere and the use of mysterious flutes and strings captivate the listener. [CD4]8.572449The "Minnesänger" were German court singers active in the late Middle Ages who sang love songs in honor of virtuous ladies. During this period, Neidhart was known as one of the most popular court singers of his time. The songs, which seem to sing of melancholy, but also play dances when necessary, and incorporate seasonal customs, are interesting reminders of life at the time. [CD5]8.554837Orff's orchestral choral work "Carmina Burana" seems to have experienced a renewed boom at the end of the 20th century. The songs on this album are excerpts from the original 300 or so songs compiled around the 13th century at a monastery in Beuern, southern Germany, which various researchers have attempted to restore since its discovery in the early 19th century. The content varies from love songs, drinking, sexual hijinks, anger, parodies, and so on. [CD6]8.553833Machot's "Notre Dame Mass," considered the first ever mass to be performed in full. It is famous for its music-historical value, but the lyricism that emerges from its archaic style is astonishing. The "True Story" chronicles the mysterious love affair between an elderly composer and a young maiden, Peronne, through their correspondence. Track 10 is a masterpiece in which a single singer sings unaccompanied for nearly 20 minutes. (1/5) Naxos Japan
