This fascinating 30-disc box set traces the "history of Western music" from the Gregorian chant, which is said to have been established roughly between the 9th and 10th centuries, to the end of the 17th century, just before the arrival of Bach and Handel. In particular, the "Renaissance Music" releases, which were still rare in the 1990s, have become a valuable resource not only for general listeners, but also for researchers. It is famous for its music-historical value, but the lyricism that emerges from its archaic style is astonishing. The "True Story" chronicles the mysterious love affair between an elderly composer and a young maiden, Peronne, through their correspondence.
