A collection of previously unreleased recordings by a legendary jazz trio, discovered in the archives of a Latvian TV studio Recorded in 1967, this album features performances by a trio consisting of Russian pianist and journalist Yuri Vikharev, Latvian double bassist Juris Akis, and drummer Einars Raibais. Juris Akis and Einars Raibais are among the most important figures in the Latvian jazz scene, while Yuri Vikharev is known for having worked as a journalist during that era, writing articles for the American music magazine "Down Beat." There is even a story from that era—typical of the time—that his payment consisted of American jazz records. Their recordings had never been released before, so one could only imagine their playing style, but this album brings a part of it to light for the first time. Opening with a cover of Miles Davis’s “So What,” this album captures a performance that is both beautiful and fierce, woven together with extraordinary skill. It is a historic recording that offers a glimpse into the unfathomable charm of Latvian jazz. (Akira Yamanaka)
