In February 2020, as the new coronavirus infection (COVID-19) began to rage worldwide, composer and producer Gabriel Prokofiev (grandson of Sergei Prokofiev) returned from his native Russia to his base in Hackney, London. Shortly before his return, he performed the works he had written during his four years in Russia with the Open Sound Orchestra, an ensemble from Moscow. This is recorded on this album. Expressing a sense of global crisis and frustration in life, the 16 tracks that transport the listener to a dystopia are free-flowing, blending grime, techno, ambient, and more, and are never confined to a genre. Mobocracy" is an anxious, panicked explosion of techno classics; "Compound Stabuler" is a synth-driven experimental rock mashup; and the shortest interlude, "1,2,3,4,5,6," is a dance piece by the British Alexander Whitley Dance Company and a mesmerizing 50-second vocal performed by Gandini Juggling.And perhaps the most unique aspect of Gabriel's production approach is not only the fusion of different genres, but also the use of idiosyncratic beat structures. Instead of the common 4/4 beat, Gabriel uses five, seven, and three beats, which leads the listener into a pleasant confusion.
