The Beach Boys recorded two shows from their Thanksgiving Day tour in November 1967. Detroit & Washington, High Master Quality! The Beach Boys had a string of bad luck in 1967, with the album "Smile" falling through and their appearance at the Monterey Pop Festival being cancelled. After regaining their composure, they produced the album "Wild Honey" and went on a tour in time for Thanksgiving. From the November 1967 tour, commonly known as the "Thanksgiving Tour," the first day of the tour (November 17) in Detroit and the third day in Washington (November 19) are recorded as a coupling. Brian was so disappointed by the cancellation of the "Smile" album that he lost all desire to create, but the band members took the initiative to create an album "Smiley Smile" from fragments of "Smile" and released it in September of the same year. Brian and Mike Love also went back to the basics, co-writing nine songs and producing the album "Wild Honey" without the Wrecking Crew, using their own playing as much as possible. The band went on tour, and even though they were in the doldrums, the members on stage seemed to be having a great time. They must have felt a sense of accomplishment from "Wild Honey," which they had created themselves. Carl Wilson's contribution to the band was especially impressive, and his burgeoning vocals, in Brian's absence, would become the face of the band in the future. The set list incorporates a number of new songs, including the idyllic "Country Air," the B-side of the "Country Air" single. How She Bugalooed It," which begins with a skit-like intro, is another new song that makes use of the âSock Itâ phrase that was popular or Otis Redding's phrase at the time. A rare treat is "Graduation Day" from the Washington show, with their unique harmonies.The title tune "Wild Honey" was incorporated into the delicious song order, which was sandwiched between the next song "Good Vibrations" with the famous song "California Girls" being staged to stop playing in the middle, showing their confidence in the new album. The album also includes "Help Me Rhonda" and "Sloop John B." from the Boston show (Nov. 23) as bonus tracks. Longtime fans of the band may be surprised at the richness of this little-known tour.
