The Irish-French composer Auguste Ormes devoted her life to music in the 19th century, when it was difficult for women to work as artists, and her life was admired by many. Her three-movement symphonic poem "Roland the Mad" is a masterful depiction of the intense emotional ups and downs of a knight who temporarily loses his sanity in the madness of love, beautifully rendered with the undulating sounds of a richly colored orchestra, and is a shining example of her outstanding artistry. Her talent for vividly portraying mythological figures also stands out in the charming "Andromeda," in which she is saved from a ritual sacrifice by her beloved Perseus. Three other orchestral works are also included. They are performed by the Rhineland-Palatinate State Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Michael Francis. (Naxos Japan)
