Colin Davis, Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra

Description:

75th Anniversary of the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra. The Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra (BRSO), which celebrates its 75th anniversary in 2024, has released the first live recording of the Symphonie fantastique, a specialty of the orchestra's third principal conductor, Colin Davis. There are already four different recordings of this piece by Davis, but this is a performance that is different from the others. Davis's "Symphonie fantastique" has been recorded by the London Symphony Orchestra (1963), the Concertgebouw Orchestra (1974), the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra (1990), and the London Symphony Orchestra (2000). The Concertgebouw recording, in particular, is often cited as one of the best recordings of the same music. What is impressive is that the performance times of these four recordings are almost the same. The difference between the shortest Concertgebouw recording (55:14) and the longest re-recording by the London Symphony Orchestra (56:44) is only one and a half minutes, and the performance time of each movement is not greatly affected. This shows how complete Davis's interpretation was. The BRSO disc that appeared there is the longest at 58:37, excluding the applause. The third movement, in particular, takes nearly 19 minutes while the other performances are all in the low 17-minute range, creating a stifling performance that evokes a bleak and haunting landscape. The finale begins with calm steps, but the tempo gradually increases after the halfway point, and finally ends in less than 10 minutes (excluding applause), along with the Concertgebouw disc. The audience cheered as soon as the last note sounded. The second movement is a rare find for fans of Davis's music. In the second movement, Davis uses cornet as he always does. Naxos Japan
