Alexander Soddy, a mid-career conductor born in Oxford in 1982, has been music director of the National Theater Orchestra of Mannheim since the 2016/17 season and is known for his achievements in dramatically expanding the orchestra's repertoire. His previous work, Messiaen: Turangalila Symphony (OEHMS OC472), showcased his mastery of large orchestras and sparkling music, and this time he performs two works by Elgar, a native of his own country. The bright and lively overture "Cockayne" and the long and profound "Symphony No. 1" are performed with great sympathy, vividly portraying the character of each work. Naxos Japan
