Description:

Croatian old-time music singer Katarina Livljanic continues to explore the true face of the Balkan Peninsula's historical heritage, learning from local traditional music as well as from her own research on old-time music. She has long been pursuing the traditional songs of the Balkans with her own group, Dialogos, as well as with a male voice ensemble, Cantaduri, as a guest. This time, the focus is on the medieval music of Bosnia and Herzegovina, which has been steadily recovering after the Yugoslav civil war. The performance will be centered on a restored version of a chapel song, in which only the verses remain without music, and will be accompanied by a capella and a few medieval instruments, while reciting the inscription using the traditional singing method in which the first singer sings a long phrase as long as he can hold his breath. The restoration of the music references the rhyme scheme of the verses and oral traditions that remain today, and is an ambitious attempt to highlight the soundscape unique to this region, where not only Eastern Orthodox Christianity, but also Islamic and Jewish traditions have colored the history. The sound world is woven together with beautiful male and female a cappella voices and echoes. This is a piece full of unique charm that will make you want to revisit it again and again.
