Pachelbel, Johann (1653-1706)

Description:

The unexpected face of Pachelbel, which approaches comfortably with the sound of the middle and bass strings. Space Time Continuo. The first release on the fully-fledged ANALEKTA label is a collection of works by Pachelbel, who had a great influence on the great Bach in his childhood. Born in Nuremberg in the same year as Corelli in Italy, Pachelbel's music is rooted in church music, and in keeping with the German musical tradition of the time, the polyphony that made up the composer's numerous organ pieces is performed here in a consort arrangement for string ensemble. Many of the pieces are also important in Lutheran liturgy. Many of the pieces are based on the traditional melodies of the Magnificat, which was also emphasized in the Lutheran liturgy, and the original organ preludes were written for all church melodies, but it is notable that only cello-like low-mid string instruments are used. At the time, the cello had not yet been formalized into its current form, and the players in this recording use cello piccolos, five-string cellos, and other instruments with relatively high registers, depending on the piece. While including works by McKinley, a contemporary Canadian composer with a sense of transparency and groove, the order of the pieces is also very pleasing, with the famous "Canon" being played unexpectedly and casually just as the ear becomes accustomed to the Baroque medium-low string consort, which has nothing to do with heaviness. This is a good disc that shows the "present" of ancient instrumental music, and not just a mere historical exploration, thanks to the maturity of the Canadian ancient music world. Naxos Japan
