The Musical Art Quartet (MAQ) was formed in 1926 by teachers and alumni of the Instiute of Musical Art, the predecessor of the Juilliard School. The MAQ, along with the Perole Quartet (with Lillian Hooks on viola), was noted as an up-and-coming American-born string quartet at a time when chamber music was not yet very popular in the U.S. Gregor Piatigorsky, who heard the MAQ, called it "the best string quartet I've ever heard". Despite their more than 20 years of activity, there have been few recordings of the quartet, and the Haydn Op. 54-2 is the world premiere recording of Haydn's string quartet (in all movements, not just excerpts), so this is a rare reissue. The inclusion of Haydn and Schubert, each named after a "lark," is also eye-catching. Founder and leader Sascha Jacobsen was born into a Jewish family in Helsinki during the rule of Imperial Russia. He studied under Leopold Auer, but later fled the country due to the destabilization of Imperial Russia and moved to the United States, where he became active.Sascha in "Mischa, Yascha, Toscha, Sascha" composed by Gershwin in 1921 is Jacobsen, and the lyrics of this song are printed on the last page of the booklet of this CD (by the way, Mischa is Ehrman, Yascha is Heifetz, Toscha is Zaidel). The original CD also includes an extensive commentary (12 pages in English) by Tully Potter, an expert on the history of string instrument playing. Naxos Japan
