Description:

Selim Palmgren studied under Busoni, developed an overwhelming technique, and later became one of the leading pianists in Scandinavia. As a composer, he also left a significant mark on the world of 20th century piano music. Most of the works in this fifth collection are world premiere recordings. The opening piece, "Exotic March," is a small piece with an oriental atmosphere. The "Postlude" was performed at Palmgren's funeral in 1951. The second piece, "Finnish Ballad," is a variation on a Karelian folk song. The second piece, "Finnish Ballad," is a variation on a Karelian folk song. The delicate beauty of the second piece, "Powder Snow," is beloved, but the other pieces have never been recorded. The "Improvisations and Scherzos" are scherzo and romantic improvisations in an academic style. It is the culmination of Palmgren's early years. Six Piano Pieces" is a collection of pieces published in Denmark shortly before Palmgren left for the United States. The "Sonatine" from 1935 is the first work Palmgren wrote in a long time after the death of his wife five years earlier, which kept him away from composing. The second movement, which has a nostalgic feel, is impressive. The suite "Spring" at the end of the album is not Op. 27, which is often heard, but Op. 47, composed around 1915, and although Izumi Tateno has performed the first piece "Evening Song" and the sixth piece "Finnish Caprizietto," it is rare to hear the whole piece. Jouni Somelo is one of the most active pianists in contemporary Finland. Studied under Georges Cyfra and Michael Ponti, he has a wide repertoire of technical works and has made over 100 recordings for various labels. Naxos Japan
