Description:
The complete piano works of Norwegian composer Carl Gustav Spalle Olsen. As a child, the family emigrated briefly to Denmark, but returned to Oslo when he was six years old and settled here. He studied music and became a violinist with the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra in 1923, where he played for 10 years and was taught by the Norwegian composer Fattin Vahlen. In 1936, he wrote his masterpiece, the oratorio "Draumkvaedet" (Dream Poems), and studied with Percy Grainger, who was a strong influence on him. He has been active as a teacher and critic, and has written orchestral works, choral works, and songs. In 1950, he was elected a member of the Norwegian National Broadcasting Council and published a biography of his teacher, Grainger, among other accomplishments. Norwegian folk songs and dances are the source of his creativity, and the piano works on this album are no exception. All of them are short and simple, but their understated tunes highlight their sophistication and depict a world condensed into a small piece of music. Naxos Japan
