Telemann (1681-1767)

Description:

After studying law in Leipzig, Johann Kuhnau worked as an organist in Zittau and eventually returned to Leipzig to become organist at St. Thomas' Church, where in 1701 he succeeded Schelle as Thomaskantor. As a keyboard music composer, he wrote radical works such as the "Biblical Sonata," but he is said to have maintained a conservative position in the field of church music. However, it is currently impossible to know what he really was, as many of his works are of unknown compositional date, and sometimes quite a few of them are considered not to be his true works. Of the pieces on this album, the two funeral songs "Ach Gott, wie lasst Du mich verstarren" and "Gott hat uns nicht gesetzt zum Zorn" are the most likely to be his true compositions, but the other pieces, along with Bach, Handel and Telemann The other pieces are also in the typical style of church music of the time, along with Bach, Handel and Telemann.
