Description:
“MiaGargaret,” released in 2020 by Chicago-based singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and producer GiaMargaret, is a significant work that quietly yet profoundly reflects the core of her artistic expression. Conceived as a follow-up to her 2018 album “There’s Always Glimmer,” this album was born during a period when she was forced to cancel her tour due to illness and was unable to sing for about six months. Having lost her voice, she turned to the synthesizer, using it to calm herself and hold onto her identity as a musician as she shaped this album. Pitchfork also described the album as one that built “soft, meditative loops” in place of her lost voice. The 11 tracks on this album, centered around synthesizers, piano, and acoustic guitar, weave in everyday field recordings—such as footsteps, church bells, the crackling of fire, and the lapping of lake waves—to paint a delicate landscape where pain and stillness, loneliness and recovery intertwine. The opener, "apathy," features fragments of actual vocal therapy audio, while "body" samples the voice of philosopher Alan Watts. Furthermore, the closing track, "lesson," is the only song on the album to feature Gia’s own vocals, gently hinting at the promise of recovery that lies beyond the lost voice. The album was composed, performed, and recorded at home from summer to fall 2019, with contributions from Emily Cross, Stephen Steinbrink, and Doug Saltzman. What makes *MiaGargaret* special is that it is not merely a "placeholder album from a time when she lost her voice." Exclaim! described the album as a record of a journey from anxiety to self-healing and the rediscovery of a love for music itself, hailing it as a work that illuminates Gia Margaret’s growth and versatility as a songwriter and producer. The Clash also viewed it as an ambient work—one without lyrics—that nonetheless conveys rich emotion. Although GiaMargaret would eventually regain her voice, this album symbolizes that "recovery period" while also serving as a crucial bridge leading to her subsequent work, *RomanticPiano*. It is not a work born solely from the inability to use her voice, but rather an album that proves music can still heal and guide people even amidst the inability to sing. *MiaGargaret* is a work in which the essence of the artist GiaMargaret crystallizes with unparalleled beauty beyond the realm of words.
