Description:

Gasmov father and son combine with an American string quartet! Also featuring the Afghan string instrument, the rhubarb! This Folkways album will be released simultaneously with "Spiritual Music of Azerbaijan" (Rice FLR-9002). The Kronos Quartet, an American string group that has performed contemporary music with a wide range of musicians, is joined by Alim Gasmov & Fargana Gasmov, who have passed on Azerbaijan's unique classical music, "mugam," to the present day, and Homayoun Saki, a player of the rhubarb, a traditional Afghan string instrument. The Kronos Quartet is a unique collaboration of Alim Gasmov and Farghana Gasmov, who are the current performers of "mugham" music, and Homayoun Saki, a player of the traditional Afghan string instrument, the rubab. The Kronos Quartet is a string quartet group formed in 1973 by violinist David Harrington and currently based in San Francisco. They have collaborated with musicians of various genres, including David Bowie and Bjork on the rock side, and Taraf de Haidouks of the gypsy band on the world side. The addition of the powerful singing voice of Gasmoh and his band was amazing in itself, but they added an even stronger Central Asian flavor by featuring Homayoun Saki, a rhubarb player representing Afghanistan, and percussionists who have been working with him. The first piece was a 28-minute instrumental piece composed by Homayoun, which was performed by the instrumentalists alone. The second piece was followed by a performance by Gasmov and his son, who played a total of five pieces, including a familiar Azerbaijani tune. With so many musicians participating, the accompaniment was much thicker than in previous Gasmov performances, and the mix of Western and Central Asian approaches to the music gave a more stateless flavor to the sound. Gasmov and his son were perhaps a little excited by the unusual accompaniment, but they were more enthusiastic than usual and played their strong, robust vocals. The DVD includes scenes of rehearsals and performances, as well as explanations of the folk instruments. Of course, a full-color booklet (44 pages!) is also included in the book. The DVD also includes a full-color booklet (44 pages!).This is world music! This is a work in which you can feel a tremendous cross-cultural clash. It may be said to be one of the most ambitious works in recent years.
