■Supervised and curated by Toru Hashimoto (SUBURBIA), with artwork by Jiro Fujita (FJD) and mastering by Calm, this 7-inch single features 12 all-star artists performing new covers of Studio Ghibli songs under the theme of “the happiness of afternoon coffee,” A 7-inch single cut from the newly recorded Ghibli song cover compilation Café l’Après-midi Meets Studio Ghibli! ■Side A: Miyuki Hatakeyama with Ryuhei Koike / Fine On The Outside Featuring a heart-wrenching, deep, and warm vocal performance by Miyuki Hatakeyama—a one-of-a-kind singer beloved by music fans and artists worldwide since her debut—and Ryuhei Koike, a guitarist who plays beautiful acoustic guitar rooted in bossa nova, folk, and reggae, this wonderful collaboration brings us a Ghibli song is a cover of “Fine On The Outside” by Priscilla Ahn, the theme song from the 2014 film When Marnie Was There, directed by Hiromasa Yonebayashi. Composed solely of acoustic guitar and vocals, this simple yet profound cover is a beautiful, deeply moving piece. With Miyuki Hatakeyama’s enveloping vocals—imbued with a dreamlike charm—blending seamlessly with Ryuhei Koike’s gentle, delicate guitar tones, this is a wonderful piece that offers a soothing, healing sensation that touches the heart and brings peace to the soul. ■Side AA: bird (Produced by Keiichi Tomita “Tomita Lab”) / “I’m Done Being Alone” Singer bird, who continues to captivate music fans across all genres with her soulful vocals, original compositions, and collaborations with various artists, presents a Ghibli song: a cover of Akiko Yano’s “Hitoribocchi wa Yameta,” the theme song from the 1999 film My Neighbor Totoro directed by Isao Takahata. Akiko Yano’s “I’m Done Being Alone.” Keiichi Tomita—known as “Tomita Lab”—who handled production and arrangement, has breathed new life into the charming atmosphere of the original and the appeal of this pop song, which features a flowing piano melody as its centerpiece. With a gentle rhythm that blends bossa nova, jazz, and 1970s easy listening, beautiful strings, and an exquisite arrangement that pays homage to the original through piano flourishes, this is a wonderful track that captivates listeners with the innocent radiance of bird’s vocals, sung freely, effortlessly, and with a comfortable, relaxed ease. ■The cover features an original illustration by Shiho Sato, a painter known for her background art in Studio Ghibli films, and Shinichiro Yamada, an animator who started his career at Ghibli, with design by FJD!
