Sonatas of wild abandon by Italian Baroque composers Playing of delicacy and vitality that brings the fervour of the age back to life Violin music developed enormously during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Among the Italian composers who led the way in Europe, Corelli and Veracini were both outstanding violinists who left behind finely polished works for the instrument. Sho Maruyama, a Baroque violinist of the new generation, turns here to the wilder, more extravagant sonatas of these two composers, and with playing of delicacy and vitality he brings the fervour of the age back to life. - Ensemble LMC Born in Yokohama. After the music course at Kanagawa Prefectural Iyasaka High School he graduated top of his class from the Kyoto City University of Arts, receiving the Kyoto Mayor's Prize and the Kyoto Music Association Prize, and went on to complete the special course in early music at the Tokyo University of the Arts. He has won first prize in numerous competitions. He has performed at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, the Mátyás Church in Budapest, St Peter's Basilica in the Vatican and the Basilica of St Paul in Rome, and has appeared on NHK E-Tele's "La La La Classic" and NHK-FM's "Recital Passio". He is a member of period-instrument groups including Bach Collegium Japan, Orchestra Libera Classica and Les Boréades; concertmaster of the early music ensemble Contrapunto; director and solo concertmaster of the period orchestra La Musica Collana; leader of Ensemble LMC; and violinist of Trio Ace. Shimane holds a doctorate in music (cello) from the Tokyo University of the Arts, where he received the Doseikai Prize and the Graduate School's Acanthus Music Prize, and he completed his studies at the Conservatoire Erik Satie in Paris. He has given recitals at the Musée d'Art et d'Histoire in Paris and at Tokyo Bunka Kaikan. He studied Baroque cello with the late Anner Bylsma, Emmanuel Balssa and Hidemi Suzuki, and viola da gamba with Christine Plubeau and Hiroshi Fukuzawa. He is principal cellist and assistant director of the period orchestra La Musica Collana, with whom he appeared on NHK's "La La La Classic" as both commentator and performer, and is a member of Orchestra Libera Classica, the early music ensemble Contrapunto, Les Boréades and Trio Ace, as well as a full member of the Japan String Teachers Association. His CD "Les Monologues" was named a recommended disc by the Yomiuri Shimbun, the monthly "Serai" and "Ongaku Gendai", and a runner-up Special Selection by "Record Geijutsu". (1/2) Tobu Land System
