The Vienna Symphony Orchestra was founded in 1900 as the "Vienna Performing Society Orchestra" and boasts a long history of more than 100 years. Its founder, Ferdinand Löwe, served as the orchestra's chief conductor for 25 years, and since then, such renowned conductors as Furtwängler, Karajan, Sawallisch, Giulini, and Prêtre have stepped to the podium to refine the orchestra's sound. The Vienna Symphony Orchestra has recorded many great performances, but surprisingly, there has been no recording of Beethoven's complete symphonies until now. To fill that void, Philip Jordan will be releasing a series of performances beginning in the fall of 2017. This first album includes Symphonies Nos. 1 and 3, performed in 2017. According to the booklet, Jordan considers both works to be innovative and groundbreaking, especially No. 3, which, rather than the title "Hero," uses a "Promethean theme" in the last movement. He says that he performed No. 3 from his own unique perspective, "I related various motives from the beginning of No. 1 so that the last movement of No. 3 would be the greatest climax of the piece.
