Description:

Welser-Möst & Cleveland Orchestra's Brahms Cycle Now Available on Video! Recorded in Cleveland, Vienna, and London! The Brahms Cycle with the Cleveland Orchestra, of which Welzer-Möst has been the Music Director since 2002, is now available on video. Recorded in Cleveland, Vienna, and London. The Brahms Cycle opens at Cleveland's Severance Hall, their home base, in January 2014. The concert featured Symphony No. 4 and the Violin Concerto with Julia Fischer as soloist. Symphony No. 4 is a work from Brahms' mature period, and is rich in the stylistic beauty that Brahms had achieved, using old styles such as church melodies and passacaglia themes. Welser-Möst restrained excessive expression, polished the details smoothly, and built up the music with natural breathing and care. The performance is spontaneous and spontaneous, with the 13-year veteran of the orchestra in perfect breath. And then the Violin Concerto. Julia Fischer played each note with great care, making the contours of the music clear and the performance convincing. The orchestra, too, enjoys Brahms' orchestral twists and turns, which supports Fischer's performance well. In February, Yefim Bronfman was invited to perform Piano Concertos Nos. 1 and 2. Bronfman's performance was majestic, and his leisurely playing naturally drew enthusiasm from the orchestra, giving a powerful impression as a whole. Especially at the beginning of the First Symphony, Brahms's distinctive profound sound was heard with overwhelming power and on a grand scale. The "Variations on a Theme by Haydn" and the "Tragic Overture," both of which were performed by the Cleveland Orchestra, were also performed dynamically, with no extra strength on their shoulders. The last video shows Symphony No. 1 performed at the BBC Proms in September of the same year and Symphonies Nos. 2 and 3 at the Musikvereinsaal, Vienna; the BBC Proms in 2014 featured a Brahms Cycle by each orchestra, with the Budapest Festival Orchestra taking over Symphonies Nos. 3 and 4, The Cleveland Orchestra performed Symphonies Nos. 1 and 2. This video shows the performance of Symphony No. 1. Brahms spent 21 years composing this first symphony. It has been described as "Beethoven's 10th symphony" because of its rich content that shows the length of its composition period. The second and third symphonies were performed at the Musikvereinsaal in Vienna. Welser-Möst made headlines when he suddenly announced his resignation as music director of the Vienna State Opera shortly before this performance. Also included is a video interview with Welzer-Mesto, Fischer, and Bronfman, in which they talk a lot about their views on the performance and the work.
