Description:

The historic Juilliard String Quartet was formed in 1946 by professors of the Juilliard School of Music at the suggestion of William Schuman, a composer who was the principal of the Juilliard School in New York. The quartet is a prestigious quartet whose traditional sound has been passed on without regret, even though a number of players have been replaced. This recording was made at the 1965 festival, when the second violin and cello members changed from the founding members and acquired a new sound. The rigorous ensemble of the time, when they were beginning to make studio recordings of Beethoven and Bartók, has not changed at all in the live performance. They play three of their best works, Bartók, Mozart, and Dvořák, eloquently in light of their motto: "Even classical works should sound new." Naxos Japan
