Take a look at the album cover and think to yourself, “Hmm, this is a refreshing take on Beethoven…” and then just give this album a listen with an open mind. I was genuinely surprised by the pianist, Yunpänen, who pulls off a surprising twist in the recapitulation of the exposition in the Piano Sonata No. 1. These days, it’s common to freely add ornamentation to Mozart, but isn’t that something we don’t usually do with Beethoven? With that in mind, there are plenty of discoveries to be made not only in the First Sonata but in the other sonatas as well. This is a Beethoven (1770–1827) who seems to be chuckling to himself. In stark contrast, the two late sonatas on CD 2 are solemn and profound. The enigmatic expression in the third movement of the “Harm Klaviere” is nothing short of magnificent.
