Description:

New Baroque! This is a new collection of harpsichord works created through the collaboration of Pablo Escande—an expert in early music who creates new music with an Argentine flair—and harpsichordist Sakurako Mitsuhashi. In addition to Partita No. 1 (2006) and Partita No. 2 (2008)—composed by Escande in a neo-Baroque style using Greek modes—this album features J.S. Bach’s Fantasy and Fugue in C minor, which hints at the composer’s innovative experiments, with Escande completing the unfinished fugue in Bach’s own style; Furthermore, Escande has supplemented the incomplete form of Mozart’s Suite K. 399—a work rarely performed—in accordance with Mozart’s compositional style. This album invites you to enjoy a “New Baroque” reborn in the modern era, alongside new interpretations of works left behind by these great geniuses. Escande is a young, brilliant composer born in Argentina in 1971. He has received commissions from artists such as Birsma and Izumi and Tatsuno, and has also performed his own works alongside them. In 2007, he received an Honorable Mention at the Eleanor Composition Competition in the United States. In 2008, he was selected as the Symbol Artist for the Tanba no Mori International Music Festival. Sakurako Mitsuhashi studied piano at the Tokyo Metropolitan Arts High School, graduated from the harpsichord department at the Tokyo University of the Arts, and studied abroad at the Utrecht Conservatory. She has studied harpsichord under Masaaki Suzuki, Siebe Henstra, Pierre Antay, and Aline Zilberaisch; basso continuo under Itsuro Tada and Yoshiko Kojima; and organ under Makiko Hayashima. In 1998, she was a semifinalist at the Bruges International Early Music Competition. In 2000, she received the Kyoto Aoyama Music Award. In 2001, she placed third (with no first prize awarded) at the Yamanashi Early Music Competition. She is widely active both in Japan and abroad as a soloist and continuo player. Her performances of Bach are so powerful that one feels as if one might be swallowed up by the undulating chromatic swells. Her interpretations of Escande’s works convey an exquisite sense of “pauses.” Mitsuhashi’s talent as a versatile performer truly shines through. King International
