Gould made a sensation in the music world with his 1955 recording of the *Goldberg Variations*, meticulously crafted using state-of-the-art studio technology. As he became consumed by a hectic performance schedule, he began to question the very nature of concerts; buffeted by bouts of mental distress, his concert cancellations became increasingly frequent starting in the 1950s. Amidst this, there were occasions when he would be inspired to deliver fulfilling live performances—and this 1958 Vancouver concert is a prime example. It is a magnificent performance of the *Goldberg Variations* in which his imagination soared freely within the unique, ephemeral nature of a live performance. Featuring bold variations in tempo and a distinctive approach to the repetition of each variation, this performance treats the 1955 studio recording as a blueprint while possessing the freedom not to be bound by it—a significant difference. Furthermore, while the 1959 Salzburg live recording begins to show the sense of tempo that would lead to the 1981 studio version, this Vancouver live performance still features a fiercely intense interplay of tempo changes. The booklet contains a detailed analysis of the performance, comparing each recording, making for an incredibly engaging read. The jacket design features a meticulously crafted silver print.
