Never heard "Hero" like this! The 1961 Bergen live performance is reissued from the master recordings. The live recording of Mravinsky and the Leningrad Philharmonic Orchestra performing at the Bergen Music Festival in May-June 1961 has come to the light of day. The concert on June 2 consisted of Beethoven's "Heroes" in the first half and Shostakovich's Symphony No. 5 in the second half, and the entire program is now available on CD. Beethoven's "Heroes" was previously released on CD on the Hunt label, but this time it was reissued from the master recordings held by the broadcasting station. This is the first time Shostakovich's Symphony No. 5 has been released on CD, and this is Mravinsky's 13th recording of the same piece. This "Hero" performance is shocking. The muscular music, with no waste whatsoever, comes at you with a tremendous driving force that no one can stop, and the 46 minutes fly by in a flash. The ensemble is astonishingly detailed, yet still manages to deliver an astonishing ensemble performance. The tone is lustrous, the rhythms are elastic, and the music and energy are boundless. Among the many great performances of "Hero," it is rare to find one so exciting. The sound quality is incomparable to that of the Hunt recording.The later recordings of Shostakovich's Fifth Symphony have shone as definitive recordings, but this performance has a clear sense of youthfulness and supremacy that is fresh and appealing beyond compare.
