The Beach Boys

Description:

The Beach Boys shed their striped shirts and became a more contemporary live band, performing during their "Surf's Up" period! The year 1971 was a year of change for the Beach Boys, as their new manager, Jack Leahy, wanted them to shed their striped shirts and go beardless, and become a live act more in tune with the times. The album "Surf's Up" (1971), released four months later, was the band's biggest hit in a long time and brought the Beach Boys name back into the spotlight. To dispel the band's previous image, Leelee had them perform with the Grateful Dead in April, and on May 1, they performed at an anti-war concert in Washington, DC. This May 11 was also with Peter Yarrow (Peter, Paul & Mary) at a benefit concert in support of the Berrigan Brothers, leaders of the most radical anti-war and anti-establishment movement in the Catholic Church. Brian did not tour again until 1974.Dennis Wilson was absent due to recording for the movie "Disconnection (Two-Lane Blacktop)". Drums were handled by Dennis Dragon, brother of Darryl Dragon (Key: later Captain of Captain & Tennille), who was a touring member at this time. Bass was supposedly handled by Ed Carter, who was originally a guitarist. Despite these irregularities, the band was in great form, and the recent songs from the late 1960s onward, which were concentrated in the first half of the set list, were played in a very sturdy manner. The second half of the set consisted of "Pet Sounds" and some of the band's best-known songs from the early years. This is a valuable sound source that captures the ever-changing Beach Boys.
