And bandleader Greg Gonzalez captures all the emotions that romanticism can induce. Whereas previous albums have been a collection of various romances, "X's" focuses on a single love affair that spans four years. Gonzalez also continues to observe the structure of classic pop songs, while moving away from the sounds of the 50s and 60s and gravitating toward the slow dances of the 70s and 80s. The resulting overall energy resembles a disco ball that captures tears on the dance floor.The X's, like previous Cigarettes After Sex records, is a lean collection of work that is characterized by the places where it was recorded. The first EP was recorded in a university stairwell in El Paso, the first album in a rehearsal space in Brooklyn, "Cry" in the courtyard of a house in Mallorca, Spain, and this time in a house at the base of the Hollywood Hills in Los Angeles, where Gonzalez lived with his then-partner The recording sessions took place in the courtyard of a house in Mallorca, Spain. Early demos were recorded live at the Bootleg Theater in August 2020 with longtime bandmates Jacob Tomsky (Dr.) and Randall Miller (B), but the majority of the recordings were made in a small bedroom over the course of six live sessions in 2021 and 2022.
