Description:
The Zurich Opera House and Tatjana Gyurbaka's production of Massenet's "Werther" will present Flores' masterful rendition of the anguish of a young man in unrequited love. Werther, a young poet living in late 18th century Germany, is in love with Charlotte, the daughter of a high priest. Charlotte has a fiancée named Albert, but Werther is unable to give up on Charlotte. Albert warns Welter and attempts to reconcile him with Charlotte's sister Sophie, but... The title role is played by the Peruvian tenor Juan Diego Flores. Charlotte is played by British mezzo Anna Stefani. Flores gives a wonderful performance of the anguish of a young man in unrequited love. In addition, Flores and Stephanie's poignant love duet is a must-hear. Conducting is Cornelius Meister, who was appointed principal guest conductor of the Yomiuri Symphony Orchestra in 2017; he will succeed Cambourin as general music director of the Stuttgart Opera from the 2018/2019 season and is one of the most talented young conductors in the field.The production is directed by Tatjana Gyurbaka, who was selected as the 2013 Opern Welt Magazine's Outstanding Director of the Year. The play is set in a single room on the stage, and is a skillfully crafted portrayal of emotions and a production that seems to mirror the people who are suffering from social oppression.
