Description:
Two early albums by General Public, a British New Wave band formed by former members of Dixie's Midnight Runners and The Specials around Ranking Roger and Dave Wakeling, who were members of the ska band The Beat, are now available in analog format. Their second album "Hand to Mouth" released in 1986 is also reissued in analog! Included the U.S. dance hit "Too Much or Nothing"! The band was formed by Ranking Roger and Dave Wakeling, former members of the ska band The Beat, former drummer of Dixie's Midnight Runners, Stoker & the group's keyboardist, Mickey Billingham, former bassist of The Specials, Horace Panter, and former member of the band, Mick Jones of the Clash, and former member of The Beat. General Public, a British New Wave band formed in 1984 by drummer Stoker of The Midnight Runners & keyboardist Mickey Billingham of the same group, bassist Horace Panter of The Specials, and Mick Jones of The Clash. Their first two albums are being reissued in analog format. The group, described as "a supergroup of the UK punk and ska scene," signed with Virgin Records in the UK and I.R.S. Records in North America, and released their debut album "ALL THE RAGE" in 1984. Although he participated in the recording of the first album, Mick Jones left the group during the production process. He was replaced by Kevin White. From the completed "ALL THE RAGE," "Tenderness," released as the second single, became a TO40 hit in the US and Canada. As a result, this album became a bigger hit in the U.S. than in its home country of the U.K., reaching a high of #26 on the Billboard HOT 200 Album Chart, where it remained for 39 weeks. In the U.K., "General Public" was a single hit. This analog reissue of "Hand to Mouth" is the second studio album released in 1986, two years after the release of "All the Rage. Gianni & Mario Minardi replaced Kevin White and Stoker on this album.Too Much or Nothing" became a dance hit in the U.S., and the album also charted on Billboard's HOT 200 album chart. General Public's bright, up-tempo post-punk sound marked the post-punk era of the 1980s. After releasing two albums, Ranking Roger and Dave Wakeling went solo in the late 1980s, but reunited with General Public in 1994. In 1994, they reunited, and "I'll Take You There" became a Top 40 hit in the United States. In 1995, they released their third album, "Rub It Better," produced by Jerry Harrison. Incidentally, Mick Jones also participated in this album as a guest. However, General Public broke up in 1995. Wakeling then toured mainly as English Beat, and Ranking Roger sadly passed away in 2019.
