The album's signature single, "Lola," was written by Ray Davies in early 1970 and recorded at Morgan Studios in London. Said to tell the romantic story of a young man and a transgender woman he meets in a Soho club, the song was inspired by a real-life encounter the band's manager had. Widely loved nearly half a century later, the B-side of the UK single is "Berkley Mews," an outtake from the previous album "Village Green Preservation Society," and the B-side of the US single is "Mindless Child Of Mother," a song written by Ray Davies. The B-side of the US single included "Mindless Child Of Motherhood," a song written by Ray Davies.
