Many people think of Handel's work when they think of the Chandos Anthems, a collection of anthems written after Handel. These were a series of cantatas written for James Bridges, the first Duke of Chandos, but Handel gradually turned his attention to opera, and Johann Christoph Peppusch succeeded him as composer. After moving from Berlin to London and making a name for himself with "The Beggar's Opera," Pepusch put a great deal of effort into this work, expanding the instrumentation and making effective use of the voices to create a magnificent work. A listening comparison with Handel is also recommended. King International
