Description:

This is the perfect ensemble! The Alban Berg Quartet at Schwetzingen 1978, a white-hot live performance! This album contains Beethoven's String Quartet No. 7 in F major, Op. 59-1 and Lutoslawski's String Quartet (1964) from the Alban Berg Quartet's live performance at the Schwetzingen Festival in April 1978. The Beethoven quartet, which has been performing since the quartet's formation, is nothing short of superb. The fine-grained ensemble is so perfect that it is hard to believe that this is a live performance, as there are no disruptions even in the fast passages. On the other hand, the second half of the program featured Lutoslawski. The Alban Berg Quartet has always had a policy of presenting 20th century music in their concerts while preserving the Viennese tradition and style.Lutoslawski's only string quartet, composed in 1964, is a three-dimensional and uniquely fascinating work that makes full use of the twelve-tone technique, with each part intersecting at a different tempo and rhythm. The final movement has a frightening feel, as if ghosts are emerging from everywhere. This is a wonderful performance that reminds us of the importance of actively featuring such contemporary works of the time in live performances. The 1st violinist, Günter Pichler, and the cellist, Valentin Erben, remained the same from the time of the group's formation in 1970 until 2008, when the group disbanded. This live recording is the first time that the group changed members since its formation in 1970, just after Klaus Metzl was replaced by Gerhard Schulz on the second violin.Schulz's performance, however, was already in the tone of the Alban Berg Quartet at this time, and it was a particularly passionate performance.
