A collection of performances of the geomungo by Jeoung Ju LEE The geomungo is a 1.65-meter wooden instrument with 16 frets and 6 strings. Currently used as a court and popular musical instrument, archaeological evidence indicates the existence of a type of zither similar to the zither that appears in the earliest written references to the Korean peninsula during the Koguryo period in the 5th century. The best example of this would be the four-stringed 17-fret, 12-fret, and 10-fret zither depicted in a tomb in the kingdom of Goguryeo. This instrument is later thought to have been the prototype for today's komungo (xuanqin). Recorded in France.
