Two years after the shocking "Rite of Spring", Lhoto has done it again! Ravel's "Daphnis et Chloe" is recreated with the instruments used in the first performance. With their fresh interpretation of "Morning Song of a Clown" from their previous work "France-Spain," Lhoto and Les Siecle have demonstrated their affinity for Ravel's works, and it is hard not to have high expectations. Originally, this is a work that allows one to fully enjoy the elaborate and extremely colorful orchestral sound as if pursuing the extremes of modern orchestral techniques, but listening to it in the sound of the time of its premiere, one is surprised to find that Ravel had a clearer sound in his mind than is thought to be the case today. Daphnis et Chloe" was premiered on June 8, 1912, one year before the premiere of "The Rite of Spring," at the Chatelet Theatre under the same conductor, Montoux. It was commissioned by the Russian Ballet, but Diaghilev was not satisfied with the work, as he considered the melody to be more important than the balletic rhythm.However, as Ravel himself called it a "dance symphony," it has become a popular concert piece as a good individual piece in which the orchestra can demonstrate its performance. However, this is the first recording with period instruments. Montoux, the conductor of the premiere, recorded it with the LSO in 1959, and now a performance has emerged that further purifies it. In addition to using period instruments, Lotto felt it his duty to correct typographical errors in the work's published score. Not only was the chorus provided by the highly regarded and talented Ensemble Edes, but for the first time, as Ravel had instructed in detail, the recording utilized both sides of the stage to create the effect of approaching from a distance. This proves that Ravel had audio ideas in this period. As a whole, the archaic atmosphere of this piece is emphasized, creating a dream world that is neither ancient nor modern. Once again, the booklet clearly lists all the instruments used except for the strings, and the year of production, making this a valuable resource.
