The DVD that comes with the luxury edition includes a bonus recording of the second 1725 manuscript of the John Passion. The "Matthew Passion" was a monumental recording, backed by years of experience and research, so we can expect great things from the "John Passion" as well. The "John Passion" was performed a total of four times during Bach's lifetime, and each time new changes were made to the work. In many cases, Bach was influenced by the instruments and performers available at the time and made revisions, but the most drastic changes were made to the second draft of 1725. For example, the opening chorus section uses the ending of the first part of the Matthew Passion, which had not yet been composed at the time, and several different arias are used in the second half of the work. Jacobs added and replaced five songs in this second manuscript alone (the first chorus, "O man, grieve for thy great sin. Song 11 tenor aria added. Song 13, tenor aria, was replaced by another song. Changed the 19th tenor aria to another tune. Changed the ending chorus to "Christ, thou Lamb of God" in Cantata BWV23, No. 40.) at the end of the album. Jacobs says that he hopes you will pay attention to this second draft and listen to it.You can listen to the recording through a high-res download (see harmoniamundi.com website) of the reconstructed recording with the inclusion of a second draft, which is included as a bonus in the package. The bonus DVD includes a making-of featurette that captures the recording process. As with the "Matthew Passion," the recording layout was carefully chosen. Jacobs requested that the chorus be divided into several parts for maximum clarity of the lyrics and the orchestra for maximum clarity of sound.
