The opening chords of the Clarinet Quintet gave me goose bumps. The fragrance of the ascending chords of the clarinet played by Wittmann drew you into a different world at once. The overall sweetness of the expression is restrained, and this seems to enhance the original splendor and nobility of the work.String Quartet No. 15 in D minor is the only piece in the Haydn set in a minor key, and the darkness of this work is brought out by the Arcandt Quartet's expression that is devoid of any waste. The mysterious darkness of the first movement, the vain brightness of the major part of the trio in the third movement, and the noble sadness of the variations in the last movement, all of them are always beautiful, but the performance is filled with a sense of magnificent pessimism. The star-studded Alcanto-Quartet was formed in 2002. Jörg Wittmann (b.1973) is a composer and clarinetist of note. Born in Munich, he studied clarinet with Gerd Starke at the Munich University of Music and later with Charles Neidich at Juilliard. He studied composition with Rihm and Henze, and has premiered clarinet concertos dedicated to him by them and various other composers. He has performed with the world's most famous orchestras and is also a composer of exceptional ability. He is a professor of both clarinet and composition at the Freiburg University of Music.
