Description:

Great Bach heard through the genius of Mozart. The Berlin Academy of Ancient Music is brilliant! The Berlin Academy of Ancient Music's new ensemble recordings have been a long time coming. After the impressive "Technique des Fugues" (HMC902064), the Berlin Academy of Ancient Music has been giving us brilliant sounds in "The Magic Flute" and "The Matthew Passion" with Jacobs' project, as well as in works by Pergolesi. This new release is titled "W. A. Mozart after J. S. Bach" and focuses on Mozart's arrangements of Bach's works. Of interest is the chamber music arrangement version of the Mean Law. Although Bach's Mean Law was not published until 1801, Mozart learned of its existence through Count Van Swieten. Mozart spent day after day studying the original source material and arranged the five fugues in four voices for two violins, viola, and cello. It is in a collection called KV405 and is believed to have been performed at a matinee concert in Count Van Svieten's salon (between 1782 and 83). This disc contains three of the five pieces. The three preludes are not necessarily the same as Bach's mean-tempered preludes, but all of them are attributed to Mozart. The Adagio and Fugue for strings in K.546 is Mozart's arrangement of the Fugue for two clavias in K.426, but the movement of the voices is more clear and the Berlin Academy of Ancient Music's musicians are very skillful.A curious new world of Bach, known through the genius of Mozart!
