Description:

The raging Diabelli Variations, full of inspiration and spirit! Shocking pedal usage! The long-awaited solo album by 2011 Academy Award-winning artist Andreas Steyer, who has been showing increasing promise in recent years, is now available! This time, Steyer will perform Beethoven's Diabelli Variations, in which Beethoven skillfully transformed the theme 33 times. This is a convincing performance based on careful study of a facsimile of Beethoven's autograph, which has recently become accessible to all. In addition, the recording includes variations by other composers, as well as an "introduction" by Beethoven himself. It goes without saying that Steyer's playing is inspired and brilliant, but his use of pedals (choice of tones) is truly fresh! The use of the Janissary pedal (a stop with a clangorous sound reminiscent of the percussion instruments used by the Turkish Guard) in the Don Giovanni Variations-like movement of Variation 23 and the chords at the beginning of the Caricature-like movement of the Czerny Exercises in Variation 24 are truly shocking! Steyer's Diabelli with all his might, is a great attention-grabber! Originally, Diabelli Variations was an attempt by Diabelli, a famous Viennese publisher and musician of the time, to give his theme to 50 popular composers of the time to compose variations on it, and to publish them all together as a single work of variations. Most composers (Liszt, Schubert, etc.) wrote variations as ordered in the spring of 1819, but Beethoven, who was working on his "Missa solemnis" at the time, did not begin his serious work until around 1822. Beethoven's work eventually became so large, consisting of 33 variations, that Diabelli published Beethoven's work alone, while those by other composers were published separately in 1824. Steyer says that the fact that Beethoven's work became a major work consisting of 33 variations "is no coincidence. It is sometimes said that Beethoven wrote this huge work because he did not want to be lumped in with other composers as a "shoemaker's peg," but if that was the only reason, the autograph score shows that Beethoven went to a great deal of trouble to write it. And.He says that Beethoven must have been intensely aware that Bach's Golberg Variations consist of 30 variations, and that the Variations on a Theme of His Own Composition consist of 32.
