Richard Wagner Edition - Bayreuth Festival / Var

Description:

Compilation of legendary live recordings of the Bayreuth Festival spanning 25 years since the war The 25-CD boxed set includes 25 years of live recordings of Wagner operas made by Decca, Deutsche Grammophon, and Philips at the Bayreuth Festival during the postwar period. The box set contains seven recordings (two of "Parsifal") from "Parsifal" conducted by Hans Knappertsbusch in 1951 to "Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg" conducted by Silvio Valviso in 1974, excluding "The Ring of the Nibelung". Joseph Kilebert, Karl Böhm, and Wolfgang Sawallisch also conducted. The singers, many of whom were young, sang with a deep familiarity with the lyrics and music under the guidance of festival co-director Wieland Wagner, and many of their recordings have become legendary and continue to be acclaimed to this day. The singing heard here by Wolfgang Windgassen, Hermann Ude, Ludwig Weber, Birgit Nilsson, and other singers is especially long-breathed and tense, a level almost impossible to achieve in a studio recording.CD 25 includes previously unreleased interviews with Irene Dallis and George London, who played Kundry and Anfortas in the 1962 production of "Parsifal" conducted by Knappertsbusch. Also included are excerpts from rehearsals of "Tristan and Isolde" conducted by Böhm. The booklet also includes an essay by Peter Quantrill. 'An almost perfect embodiment of Wagner's last and most bizarre and most profound thought' -- The Record Guide (on Knappertsbusch's 1955 "Parsifal") Perhaps the finest live recording ever made at the Festival Theatre."-Penguin Guide (for the 1962 Parsifal conducted by Knappertsbusch) Universal Music/IMS
