Description:
The first in the popular DAN PENN demo series, the 2000 CD "BLUE NITE LOUNGE" is also now available for distribution! DAN PENN's Demo Series, which has been very popular each time, started as follows, according to the liner notes of this CD written by DAN PENN himself. It all started one day in 1997 when BUCKY LINDSEY, a friend and fellow songwriter, visited DAN PENN at his home in Nashville and invited him to go fishing in Louisiana. DAN PENN, who loves fishing, agreed and suggested that he would also like to compose music. On October 17, 1997, DAN PENN, BUCKY LINDSEY, and CARSON WHITSETT, a former STAX session man and piano player who also played with BOOKER T. and later THE M.G.'S, joined the band. On October 17, 1997, DAN PENN, BUCKY LINDSEY, and CARSON WHITSETT set out in DAN's 1982 GMC van with Gibson guitars, bass, digital keyboards, and an 8-track tape machine. The "Blue Night Lounge," the title of the album, is a log cabin near a lake owned by a cousin of BUCKY LINDSEY's. While driving around St. Francisville, Louisiana, DAN PENN discovered an old church called Grace Church, and was so impressed by the old pipe organ inside that he was inspired to record a song using it. CARSON played keyboards and DAN PENN sang on an 8-track cassette, which became the first song on the album. Note that CARSON WHITSETT later played the pipe organ with the permission of the church. On the first trip to Louisiana, 3~4 songs were composed. The number of songs on the album continued to grow, mainly on two more trips." ROGER HAWKINS guested on "WHERE YOU GETTIN IT" and "LEMONADE MAN" and REGGIE YOUNG on "FUNKY FOLKS." YOU DON'T MISS WHAT YOU NEVER HAD" was co-written by AL KOOPER and DAN PENN, with AL KOOPER completing all but DAN PENN's vocals on multiple recordings. The highlights of this album are "HALLELUJAH LOUISIANA" and "A MEMPHIS MELODY. You can hear the heart-wrenching singing. The album's final gospel number, "Holding on to God," ends with "Rosemound Rain," a 10-minute-plus recording of early morning rain mixed with thunderstorms, recorded by DAN PENN himself in his log cabin on April 25, 1998. According to the liner, the producer of this rain was God. Although this album is controversial among the demo series due to the extensive use of rhythm machines, etc., it is a gem that should be appreciated by as many people as possible for the excellence of the music and singing.
