Jan Fögler became principal cellist of the Dresden State Opera Orchestra at the age of 19 and has been active internationally as a soloist from 2018 to the present. Jan Fogler’s albums of cello miniatures with orchestral accompaniment, *MyTunes Vol. 1* and *Vol. 2*, topped the German classical charts for a full month and became bestsellers not only in Europe but also in the United States. This new release is a sequel to those albums—a collection of short pieces performed as a duo with Ismo Eskelinen, a leading figure in the next generation of Finnish guitarists. Eskelinen was born in Kuopio. He studied under Timo Korhonen and Oskar Gilyia, and after winning first prize at various competitions—including the Scandinavian Guitar Competition—he has been active as a soloist and chamber musician. “Pop Songs” features a lineup of the most beautiful and popular vocal works spanning nearly 500 years—from Monteverdi, Vivaldi, Bizet, and Mozart to the Beatles, Gary Moore, and Michael Jackson. For this recording, she formed a special project team with the BBC Philharmonic and conductor Omer Meir Wellber; the works—specially arranged for cello and orchestra—have been brought vividly to life with an unprecedented freshness. The BBC Philharmonic beautifully highlights the resonance of Jan Fogler’s cello, while conductor Welber captivates with a lovely arrangement of Monteverdi’s “I Still Gaze Upon You,” enhanced by the addition of an accordion.
