<4AD> releases new album by non-binary rising folk musician Anjimari! Boston-based queer folk musician Anjimari releases "The King," her debut album for 4AD and first full-length since the critically acclaimed "Giver Taker" in 2020. If the last album was a prayer album, this one is a curse album," says Anjimari, who continues to explore what it means to be a black transperson in America on this album. Drawing from a variety of influences, including religion, Philip Glass, and real-life experiences, the album is produced with two instruments, an acoustic guitar and Angimile's own voice, and features Justin Bow, Brad Allen Williams, Sam Gendell, and James Krivcenia ( Big Thief), and was produced by Grammy and Juno Award winner Sean Everett. The preceding single, "The King," opens with a lofty choir, but suddenly an ominous arpeggio severs that illusion, and the voices become dark and serious.All 10 songs are deeply immersed in the confusion, sadness, and anger of being black in America.
