Cello master Rostropovich's session recording of Bach's Unaccompanied Cello Suites at the World Heritage Site of St. Madeleine's Cathedral in Vesleys, central France, is being re-released in a limited quantity as a four-CD box with 180 gram analog weight discs. For the cello giant Rostropovich, this is the first and last complete "unaccompanied" session recording. Rostropovich literally put his whole heart and soul into playing these six pieces, which are considered the "bible" for all cellists. Like a never-ending fountain, the music rises and falls like the gods. Rostropovich played Bach's Suite for Unaccompanied Cello in his youth, but when he became too busy working in the West, he dropped it from his repertoire and declared that he would not record it until he was 60 years old, a statement that suggests he had a special attachment to this work. This performance was recorded in March 1991, and has already received high acclaim worldwide, including the German Record Critics Award, the ECHO German Record Award, the British Gramophone Award, and the Brazilian Viva Musica.
