Aubert was a 19th century Parisian opera-comic composer whom Bonning described as "simple, joyful, pure music." This is Bonning's only recording of Aubert's complete operas. The opera "The Black Domino" is about a love plot in the royal city of Madrid. The libretto is by Eugène Scribe. He later wrote the libretti for operas by Rossini, Bellini, and Verdi, among others, but he and Aubert had a particularly long and profitable relationship, and this is one of the masterpieces that resulted from that relationship. First released in 1995, this Decca recording was greeted by all as a monumental album important to Aubert's resurgence to fame.The work was written for a virtuoso singer, a rarity today, who combines brightness and grace, and Bonning has assembled a superbly deserving lineup of singers who give a well-rounded performance.
